Question: What is the "Cast Initiation Point"?
Answer: It is the location from which you want your search to originate and radiate out to find the nearest establishments.
The cast initiation point can be entered as a latitude and longitude or,
street addresses may be used for your convenience.
Question: How do I determine my Latitude and Longitude location"?
Answer: A GPS is one way to determine your Latitude and Longitude. ProximityCast will now geocode street addresses entered into the (CIP) "Cast Initiation Point" box and display the CIP coordinates on the cast net page.
Question: How do I enter Latitude and Longitude"?
Answer: There are 3 acceptable formats to choose from:
- DMS: Degrees, Minutes, Seconds
- N 45°13'3" W 123°58'34.2"
- DM: Degrees, Minutes
- N 45°13.0500' W 123°58.5700'
- D: Degrees
NOTE: the trailing value in any format may be a decimal number.
NOTE: When hemisphere indicators (N/S E/W) are used with coordinates, it does not matter whether you enter latitude(N/S) or longitude(E/W) first. If the indicators are not used, latitude should always be entered before longitude to preclude ambiguity.
Typically we begin with a hemisphere indicator. Although the hemisphere indicator sometimes follows the coordinate value. For latitude this can be an "N", "n", "S", "s", "-", or "nothing".
- Latitude Hemisphere Indicators:
- "N" or "n" or "nothing" for the Northern Hemisphere.
- "S" or "s" or "-" for the Southern Hemisphere.
- Longitude Hemisphere Indicators:
- "E" or "e" or "nothing" for the Eastern Hemisphere.
- "W" or "w" or "-" for the Western Hemisphere.
Now, lets breakdown the DMS example above into its individual parts:
- DMS: Degrees, Minutes, Seconds
- N 45°13'3" W 123°58'34.2"
- The hemisphere indicator designates the nothern hemispere in this case.
- N 45°13'3" W 123°58'34.2"
- The latitude degree value: an integer between 0 and 90.
- N 45°13'3" W 123°58'34.2"
- The degree symbol: is usually omitted with a blank space in its place since there is no keyboard key that allows easy insertion.
- N 45°13'3" W 123°58'34.2"
- The latitude minute value: an integer between 0 and 59.
- N 45°13'3" W 123°58'34.2"
- The minute symbol: is easily inserted with the keyboard apostrophe key, but may also be omitted and replaced with a blank space.
- N 45°13'3" W 123°58'34.2"
- The latitude second value: an integer or decimal number between 0 and 59.999.
- N 45°13'3" W 123°58'34.2"
- The second symbol: is easily inserted with the keyboard double quote key, but may also be omitted and replaced with a blank space. This indicates the end of the DMS latitude coordinate.
- N 45°13'3" W 123°58'34.2"
- The hemisphere indicator designates the Western hemispere in this case. A minus sign would do the same.
- N 45°13'3" W 123°58'34.2"
- The longitude degree value: an integer between 0 and 180.
- N 45°13'3" W 123°58'34.2"
- The degree symbol: is usually omitted with a blank space in its place since there is no keyboard key that allows easy insertion.
- N 45°13'3" W 123°58'34.2"
- The longitude minute value: an integer between 0 and 59.
- N 45°13'3" W 123°58'34.2"
- The minute symbol: is easily inserted with the keyboard apostrophe key, but may also be omitted and replaced with a blank space.
- N 45°13'3" W 123°58'34.2"
- The longitude second value: an integer or decimal number between 0 and 59.999.
- N 45°13'3" W 123°58'34.2"
- The second symbol: is easily inserted with the keyboard double quote key, but may also be omitted and replaced with a blank space. This indicates the end of the DMS longitude coordinate.
Now, lets look at examples in DMS, DM, and D in multiple acceptable formats.
